F-1 International Students

Welcome to Central Virginia Community College located in Lynchburg, Virginia! We know you will be coming a long way to join us for your studies so please read the information below carefully to ensure a smooth transition.

Academic Year 2023-2024

It is important to start the application process early to allow plenty of time for us to process your I-20. If you are overseas you will need to allow at least 3 months so that you have time to go through the visa application process.

The fall semester is from August to December and the spring semester is from January to May. The application deadlines for students applying from outside of the U.S. or students that are changing their current visa status are:

  • Fall - June 1
  • Spring - November 1

The application deadlines for U.S. transfer students are:

  • Fall - August 1
  • Spring - December 1

*Note: CVCC does not admit F-1 International students for the summer semester.

An F-1 student at another college or university may enroll part-time at CVCC as a guest student with the permission of the home institution. Please review the Concurrent Enrollment procedures below to see what documentation is required.

The Fall 2024 admission deadline for new F-1 applicants is June 1.

  • Apply for admission to Central Virginia Community College
  • Submit a copy of the applicant's passport, visa (if applicable), and I-94 (if applicable)
  • Applicants are required to have U.S. medical insurance and must submit proof
  • Submit official copies of English translated secondary and university academic records
  • CVCC does not have an English as a Second Language (ESL) program and requires students to be proficient in English. This may be demonstrated by taking the English placement test.
    • Completion of Freshman English with a C or better may waive the English placement test
    • Overseas students are required to submit a TOEFL iBT score of 70+, an IELTS score of 6+, or a Duolingo score of 105+ and will be required to take the English placement test upon arrival

Cost of Attendance

CVCC is a two-year college; however, many students take more than two years to complete their degree. Estimated living costs are only for the nine month academic year. Students who intended to remain in the U.S. in summer should plan for additional costs. Please see the table below for cost of attendance. You will only need to demonstrate funding (in U.S. dollars) for one year but please be advised that you will need to have financial support for the length of your studies. F-1 International students are not eligible to receive financial aid and are classified as out-of-state students at CVCC.

Transfer Students

If you are an F-1 Transfer Student you will need to submit all of the above documents as well as the following:

  • Copies of current I-20, visa, and I-94
  • We will not require secondary transcripts; however, official copies of all U.S. college or university transcripts are required
  • Completion of the Transfer Eligibility Form (to be completed by the student and the International Student Advisor at the current institution)*

Please Note The Following:

  • CVCC does not operate dormitories, nor does it assume responsibility for locating or securing adequate housing for students.
  • Local bus service for CVCC students is available but is limited.
  • F-1 International students are classified as out-of-state students for tuition payment purposes.
  • Financial Aid is not available to F-1 International students.
  • College policies and procedures apply equally to all students regardless of immigration status.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to know and understand the F-1 Student Rules. Please print the F-1 Student Responsibilities Form, sign, and submit it with your application materials.

CVCC is required by law to notify the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) when a student has failed to maintain status, has violated immigration laws in any way, has changed status, or is no longer attending school. CVCC may refuse admission to students who have not met USCIS requirements for F-1 status.

 

CVCC welcomes guest F-1 international students for part-time enrollment while active at another institution. Students must meet the following requirements to qualify for concurrent enrollment:

  • Be in good financial and academic standing with your current college/university.
  • Be in possession of current U.S. health insurance.
  • Demonstrate English proficiency with a grade of C or better in Freshman English.
  • Submit the Concurrent Enrollment Form signed by your current college/university International Student Advisor.
  • Provide a copy of your current I-20 and I-94.

Guest students may apply to enroll in classes by filling out an application for admission and fulfilling the above requirements. Transcript(s) may be requested demonstrating completion of prerequisite courses if necessary.

Please be aware that as an F-1 International student you are required to observe all rules and regulations governing your presence in the United States and that it is your responsibility to be aware of those regulations.

Step 1: Apply to CVCC using the Admissions Application.

Step 2: Submit all documents to the Admissions & Records Office by the appropriate deadline. Once the documents have been reviewed and approved, an I-20 will be issued to the student.

Once you arrive in the United States (or receive the I-20 for transfer students), F-1 International students are required to report immediately to an International Student Advisor. You will need to have ready your F-1 visa, passport, I-20, and a printed copy of your I-94. Failure to report will result in termination of your SEVIS record and I-20.
