Health Sciences  programs are designed to help students focus on planning, managing, and providing therapeutic services, diagnostic services, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development.

Certified Nurse Aid

Nurse Aide Education Program participants will obtain licensure as a Certified Nurse Aide through completion of the NNAAP exam, will work within the scope of practices for a Nurse Aide in the state of Virginia within hospitals, long term care, facilities, or home settings, and will be able to accurately report changes in condition and responses to care plans to staff.

Clinical Medical Assistant

This program prepares students to be professional medical assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates are equipped to assist physicians with examinations and treatments, take medical histories, perform diagnostic tests, sterilize instruments and supplies, assist with minor surgery and administer medications. The program goal is to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Health Sciences Pathway

The Health Sciences I and II Career Studies Certificates are designed for the student who desires to pursue allied health programs at CVCC or other schools of choice, including nursing programs. Students transferring to other schools are responsible for verifying transferability of CVCC courses.

The Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in General Studies prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university.

Medical Coding

The career studies certificate in Medical Coding is designed for the student who desires to obtain training in International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification (ICD), medical coding and insurance billing. Upon completion of the program, the student may seek an entry-level position in hospitals, doctors' offices and more.

Medical Laboratory Technology

The Medical Laboratory Technology degree is designed for the student who desires training in medical laboratory technology. Upon completion of the program and certification, the student may seek a career as a medical laboratory technician in hospitals, doctors’ offices, health departments and private laboratories.

Phlebotomy Technician

The CVCC Phlebotomy Technician 40-Hour Program is designed to prepare students to be professional phlebotomy technicians dedicated to safely collecting venous and dermal blood specimens for laboratory testing. In addition to the classroom training, students will participate in clinical training to be completed in an accredited laboratory at a local medical center. The program prepares graduates to sit for the ASCP-BOC national certification exam in Phlebotomy.

Pre-Allied Health Academic Pathway

The Pre-Allied Health Career Studies Certificate (CSC) is designed to help prepare students for admission into allied health programs at CVCC and nursing programs at partner institutions, including Emergency medical services, medical laboratory technology, radiologic technology and respiratory therapy. Students enrolled in this CSC are not yet accepted into the certificate or degree programs listed but are completing their general education and prerequisite courses.

Radiologic Technology

The purpose of the program is to educate motivated individuals in the varied aspects of becoming a qualified medical imaging professional, including such areas as technical skills, patient care considerations, medical knowledge and appropriate work habits. Upon successful completion of all courses in the Radiologic Technology curriculum, the student is eligible to take the national registry examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Respiratory Therapy Technology

To prepare graduates with demonstrated competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists (RRTs).
