During this course, we will focus on the fundamentals of the art of blacksmithing to include a brief history of the art and its origination with an emphasis on "hand forged" projects. The students will learn how to work safely around the forge using proper personal protective equipment and safety protocols.
The students will progress using hand tools to include hammers, tongs, punches, drifts, and a variety of metalworking tools. The progression of skill development and practice will focus on understanding metal and how it behaves under heat and stress. The students will take on a variety of projects where they will learn how to taper, isolate, bend, scroll, punch, drift, fuller, and rivet metal. The class will culminate with the students exploring their creativity by designing and forging their final piece.
