Lynchburg, VA — Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is pleased to announce its award of $1,514,520 through the U.S. Department of Labor's Strengthening Community Colleges (SCC) Training Grant - Round 5. This significant development is part of a $65 million national investment designed to increase access to affordable, high-quality training, particularly in industries such as advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, and biotechnology.
With SCC funding, CVCC is joining forces with local employers like Framatome, Delta Star, and BWXT, as well as workforce agencies, community organizations, and schools, to enhance its Advanced Manufacturing career pathways. This initiative aims to address the Greater Lynchburg Region's growing need for skilled workers. The program will deliver job-focused education, offering upskilling opportunities for the existing workforce and dual enrollment options for high school students, paving the way for a stronger and more adaptable talent pipeline.
“This grant is a game-changer for our college,” said Dr. Kris Ogden, vice president of academic, student affairs, and workforce for CVCC. “Through this opportunity, we’re not only equipping students with skills for high-demand, technology-driven careers, but we’re also leveraging additional support from the Community Funding Accelerator (CFA). CFA played a key role in the application process, providing grant writing, advisory support on K-12 career pathways, and budget development. Their pro bono implementation services will further help us develop an effective plan for rolling out the SCC grant, build infrastructure, and create a strategy for sustainable long-term funding. Together, these resources will amplify our impact, benefiting both our students and the regional economy.”
CVCC is one of 18 colleges across 14 states selected to participate in this transformative initiative. With a focus on equity and innovation, the SCC program empowers community colleges to strengthen their role in workforce development and address the demands of the modern economy.
The funding, effective February 1, 2025, will support curriculum development, industry collaborations- with industry partners in fields such as nuclear energy and electrical manufacturing - and state-of-the-art equipment for hands-on learning. CVCC’s Workforce division will play a key role in bridging the gap between education and employment, providing students with the tools they need to excel in growing fields.
“This grant not only supports our students but also contributes to the economic vitality of Central Virginia,” said Dr. John Capps, president of CVCC. “It reflects our ongoing dedication to empowering our community and fostering innovative solutions to workforce challenges.”
